
COLUMBIA - Enoch Smith, Jr. passed away peacefully Friday morning, August 25, 2015 at Atria Assisted Living on Forest Drive after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 91 years old. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara Caudle Smith; his sons, Enoch Smith, III and wife, Ann Burch Smith of Columbia, Stephen Warren Smith of Columbia; and granddaughter, Lauren Michelle Smith of Dillon, Colo. Enoch was born October 6, 1923 in Columbia to the late Enoch Smith, Sr. and Lilly Winchester Smith. He graduated from University High School and the University of South Carolina with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Enoch returned to Columbia and married his wife, Barbara and began his teaching career at Columbia High School. He continued his career as head teacher at AC Flora High School and later as principal of Dreher High School from 1968 to 1972. He also worked as Director of Curriculum for the State Department of Technical Education. Upon retirement in 1976, Enoch prided himself by taking up carpentry and enjoyed telling people that it was the same vocation as his Savior, Jesus Christ. Enoch and his wife were active members of Shandon Baptist Church for many years where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher of the Legacy Builders class. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday morning, September 1, 2015, at 11:00 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Shandon Baptist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
