

Born in Edenton, North Carolina, on March 2, 1943, he was the son of Erwin and Grace Griffin, who affectionately called him Sonny. He was a 1961 graduate of John A. Holmes High School where he played tight end on the 1960 State Championship Football Team. After graduating from N.C. State University in Math and History, Pete became a lifetime Wolfpack fan, and later a USC Gamecock fan. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Pete spent over 40 years in the insurance industry. He received his IIA, Insurance Institute America Certification in 1977 and the CPCU, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter Designation in 1980. As a Senior Consultant/Project Lead, he was given the opportunity to work in over 30 states including Hawaii, and to travel the world to destinations such as South Africa, Great Britain, South America, and Bermuda.
Throughout his life, Pete had the privilege of serving in many leadership roles with church, civic, and community organizations. He was a member of Kiwanis where he worked with special needs children. He coached Dentsville Youth Football and First Baptist Basketball teams. He was a founding member of North Springs Basketball Youth League. Pete served as PTO President of E.L. Wright Middle School and founding member of E.L. Wright Education Foundation. He was a member of District II Superintendent’s Advisory Committee and District II Parent’s Advisory Committee. As a member of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church, Pete served as a Deacon and Elder and Confirmation teacher for 10 years. Most importantly, playing golf at Spring Valley Country Club, fishing with Jim at the beach, and reading American History books were lifetime loves!
Pete will be remembered as a constant inspiration and source of profound love for his family. In addition to Linda, he is survived by his son, Jeff Griffin and wife Kristen and daughter, Laura Shah and husband Keith; six grandchildren, Liza Griffin, Virginia Griffin, Rachel Griffin, Olivia Shah, Sydney Shah, and Ethan Shah. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Reggie Griffin.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church, 125 Sparkleberry Lane. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Spring Valley Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
