

COLUMBIA - EthelMarie Todd Brown, 74, died Sunday, October 9, 2016. Born October 18, 1941 to Ethel and George Todd, she grew up in Charlotte, N.C., where was a member of the last graduating class of Central High School in 1959. She attended Limestone College where she met and married Douglas. She left college to enjoy a life of adventure with Douglas. Her love of learning and literature led her to return to college at USC where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1981. EthelMarie was very active in civic organizations. She was a member of The Woman’s Club of Columbia and served on the Board of Directors for many years and President from 1976-1978. While a member, she created and chaired a committee to negotiate the sale of the club headquarters on Blossom Street. In 1971, she chaired the Telerama Mother’s March for the Richland County Chapter of the National Foundation for the March of Dimes. In addition, she chaired and developed the first Walk-a-Thon fundraiser for the March of Dimes in 1969. She served as past chairman of the Richland County Easter Seals Society. Her volunteer activities also included creating the First Chair Gourmet Fundraiser for the Symphony League in Columbia. She was appointed to the board of the Mid-Carolina Mental Health Association by Governors West and Edwards and was chairman of volunteers for their Operation Santa Claus activities. In 1970 and 1973, she was named to Who’s Who of Outstanding Young Women in America. EthelMarie loved her family and friends. Even though she grew older, she never grew up. She always loved cotton candy, hot dogs, and Cokes. Also, she knew the certainty of God’s love for her. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Douglas Cunningham Brown; son, Todd Cunningham Brown (Courtney); daughter, Julie Marie McCorkle Brown (Cynthia); grandchildren, Ellen Hudson Howard (Raven), Fleetwood Fuller Brown, Charles Agosti, Atmar Agosti, Amelia Agosti; brother, Samuel Olen Todd (Martha); nieces, Shannon Todd Beck (Shelton), Kristin Todd Gibson (Marcus). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 140 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 210, Columbia, SC 29210 or Pets Inc., 300 Orchard Drive, West Columbia, SC 29170. A memorial service for Mrs. Brown will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2016, at Shandon United Methodist Church.
