He was born July 10, 1938, in Everett, Massachusetts, the son of Eugene Famolari, Sr. and Ruth Famolari.
The first of his family to go to college, Gene graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960. He devoted his career in service to his country, developing wireless communications technology for the United States military, finishing his career as the Associate Director for Technology for the Army’s Communications-Electronic Command (CECOM) unit at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. His keen intellect and gift for engineering contributed to the development of radar systems to defend against submarine-launched missiles, guidance systems for the Patriot missile, and the creation of the Arpanet, the precursor to the Internet.
Though naturally reserved, Gene possessed a quick sly wit and enjoyed trading barbs with those around him. In retirement, he loved splitting his time between his two farms in Montrose, Pennsylvania and Morriston, Florida, caring for his many horses.
He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Edith Kelb, and his wife, Nancy Famolari. Gene is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: John and Bonnie Famolari (Blacksburg, Virginia), Andrew Schroeder and Jennifer Monk-Reising (Ann Arbor, Michigan), David Famolari and Shalinee Kishore (Lebanon, New Jersey), and Paul Famolari and Catherine Keyser (Columbia, South Carolina), and by his seven grandchildren (Kayla, Jackson, Viola, Simon, Kavya, Alex, and Sophia).
