COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian Burial for Col. Francis “Frank” Anthony Sarnowski, 91, will be celebrated, at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 3, 2018 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2018, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with a visitation following until 6:00 p.m.
The son of the late Anthony and Antoinette Sarnowski, Frank entered into this life on September 12, 1927 and departed this life to join his sainted wife, Gladys, on Thursday, November 29, 2018. He and Gladys had met just two weeks prior to their marriage, and spent just shy of 60 years together.
At 17 years old, Frank left Erie, Pennsylvania to join the Merchant Marines Liberty Ships (ships remaining from WWII). After the war, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Occupation Force in Japan. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, rising from private to full colonel. During the Korean Conflict, Frank was a wounded POW of the North Koreans. He was liberated by a company of U.S. soldiers and returned home for a long recuperation. Frank also served two tours of duty in Vietnam.
During his 33 years in the U.S. Army, Frank was awarded a Silver Star, The Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and many more citations.
Frank is survived by his brother, Bob; sisters, Rosie and Julie; sister-in-law, Lori; three children, Mickey, Cookie and Frank, Jr.; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
