Graveside service featuring Military Honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2023 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
Fred was born July 16, 1945 in Concord, NC to Iaasic J. and Hazel Ashcraft Helms. He was raised in Columbia and graduated from A.C. Flora High School. After high school he served his country proudly as a United States Marine with tours in Viet Nam and later in the Army Reserves. Fred retired from The State of South Carolina after 20 years of service. After retirement and surviving colon cancer he found a passion in volunteering at SC Oncology for 10 years.
In addition to his parents he predeceased by his five siblings, CJ Helms, Herman Helms, Sara Bailey, Kathryn Hartsell, and Jay Helms. Survivors include his wife, Caroline Helms; three children, Virginia Goodrum (Kenny), Lane Melton (Licie), Dorinda Rosado (Andrea); four grandchildren, Kathryn A. Strange, David Melton, John Goodrum (Calicia), Preston Helms; seven great-grandchildren; brother in law, Richard Bailey and sister in law, JoAnn Helms.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Fred’s honor to SCOA South Carolina Oncology Association.
