COLUMBIA - On Saturday, October 5, 2019, George Eugene “Monk” Lewis, Jr., loving husband and avid outdoorsman, tragically lost his life in an ATV accident.

Monk was born on December 30, 1960, in Columbia, SC, to Gene and Peggy Lewis. On October 15, 2005, he married the love of his life, Nancy Caroline Burek. They adored their pets like family and always laughingly referred to their two dogs, Annie and Buck, as their children. He was a supervisor in heavy civil infrastructure for Phillips and Jordan, Inc.

Monk had a passion for anything that took place outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling with his friends and family, especially Nancy, who also shared these passions. Monk was a sweet soul who will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his kindness to everyone, and his beautiful blue eyes that looked so much like his dad’s.

Monk was preceded in death by his father, Gene, and his mother, Peggy. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his three siblings, Tom Liles, Edwin Lewis, and Tammy Brearley and their families. He was also blessed with many beloved extended family who loved him dearly.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 18th, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, in Columbia, SC.

I am still in shock. Monk was one of a kind in all the best ways. It's hard to imagine a world without him in it. He was a loyal friend and adored his beautiful wife, Nancy and their dogs. Nancy, my heart is breaking for you, take comfort in the fact that Monk loved you fiercely. I love you both and my sincerest condolences to you.

Nancy, I was in your wedding. When you came thru those doors and Monk saw you,.... his beautiful blue eyes changed. I can't explain it, but the love that poured thru them was unmistakable. The love that you had between you, is what we all hope and pray for. We Love you.

I worked with Monk on our project in West Virginia. We met when he arrived back in January of this year. I instantly liked Monk. He was very friendly, always had a smile on his face and was just a great guy who quickly became my friend. He spoke often of his wife Nancy and we would talk about life working "on the road." Monk cared deeply for his crew. That was very obvious as he was a no nonsense foreman who was not afraid of working and showing the younger guys the proper way of doing something. Monk made sure whatever his crew was working on, it would be completed in a safe manner. I will miss my friend.

Sending sympathy and love to all the family. So sorry to hear this. So thankful to have been a neighbor , friend, and animal hospital employee with fond memories of Charlie! Monk was an awesome all around guy and all who loved him will miss him dearly. I hope that Nancy will reach out to me if there is anything I can do for her during this difficult time .

I am so saddened by the loss of Monk. He was such a happy soul and had the biggest smile and a laugh you could never forget.
Although it's difficult right now to see beyond the sorrow, May looking back on the memories help comfort family and friends in the days to come.

My heart has been broken. Monk was a Great friend and hunting buddy. I am going to miss him dearly. I will always remember his big laughs. His big blue eyes that grew twice the size when he got excited. He was a great man.
