COLUMBIA - A graveside service for Lt. Col. Herbert Franklin Weed Jr. (U.S. Army, Retired), 92, will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2021 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. There will be a livestream of the service starting at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2021 on Dunbar Funeral Home – Devine’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DunbarDevine. Lt. Col. Weed died Sunday, September 5, 2021. Born in Irmo, he was a son of the late Herbert Franklin Weed Sr. and Pauline Onley Weed. A Korean War veteran in the 3rd Infantry, he served for 30 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He graduated from Clemson A & M with a degree in horticulture and agriculture. He worked as superintendent of the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Beautification Division, where he was the first full time beautification consultant.
A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he loved his family and adored his grandchildren. His grandchildren describe him as kind, generous, blunt, stoic and stubborn. He always had a twinkle in his eyes and could make you laugh. He loved yardwork, gardening, flowers, hunting and fishing. A former member of Park Street Baptist Church, he was currently a member of Riverland Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his daughter, Vicki W. Hodgin of Columbia; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Louise Poston Weed; a son, Bruce Michael Weed; a great-granddaughter and a brother, Ross Onley Weed. The family wishes to thank Amedysis Home Health and Hospice, the night crew of ABC, Stephanie Preston, his sitter and special thanks to Dr. Rodney Harrison.
