COLUMBIA - Heyward Madison Coker, Jr., 73, died Sunday, August 14, 2022. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 3:00 p.m., at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Heyward was born in Sumter, SC to the late Heyward Madison Coker, Sr. and Esther Huggins Coker. He graduated from University High School in 1966 and attended the University of South Carolina where he received an Associate’s Degree. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 – 1972, achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. He married the late Brenda Kay Branham Coker on February 23, 1974 and went into residential construction with his father until becoming a Rural Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired. Heyward was a longtime member of Maple Street Southern Methodist Church, and more recently attended Kilbourne Park Baptist Church where he was active in the choir and Men’s Prayer Breakfast. He was a skilled craftsman, loved dove hunting, fishing and his dog Lillie. Most of all, he was a proud grandfather to his granddaughter whom he enjoyed entertaining.
Heyward is survived by daughters, Lydia Spry (John) of Charleston and Angie Hoole (Pierce) of Lexington; one grandchild; brother-in-law, Rocky Branham (Lynne) of Chapin; nieces, cousins and many lifelong friends.
