Dr. DuBose, son of Dr. and Mrs. Theodore M. DuBose, Jr. was born August 14, 1922, in Columbia, SC. He attended Columbia schools, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His undergraduate affiliations included Sigma Alpha Epsilon and The Order of Gimghoul. His education was interrupted by World War II service in the U.S. Marines Corps as a naval aviator. Upon discharge, he briefly attended the University of South Carolina before enrolling in the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. DuBose, a 1951 honor graduate, was also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a national honor medical society.
He continued his medical training with an internship at the Philadelphia General Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, an internal medicine residency at the George F. Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Danville, Pa and a cardiology fellowship at The Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston Salem, NC.
In 1954, Dr. DuBose returned to Columbia and began his 36 years of private practice. He retired from private practice in 1991, and, thereafter, served as Vice-President for Medical Affairs at Providence Hospital for five years. During his medical practice he served as Chief of Staff of Columbia Hospital (now Richland Memorial) and president of the Columbia Medical Society. As one of Columbia’s earliest cardiologists, he was instrumental in establishing the cardiac intensive care services at both Columbia and Providence Hospitals. Dr. DuBose was a Diplomate of the American College of Internal Medicine and a member of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. DuBose was also a member of the South Carolina Medical Society, the Medical Club of Columbia, and the American College of Physicians. In 2003, his colleagues and Providence Hospital honored him as one of the first inductees into the St. Luke Society.
Survivors include Katherine, his loving wife of 71 years, sons Hugh, Jr. (Kimberly), Clarke (Trish), Theodore (Margaret Anne) and daughter, Katherine Duvall (Ted).
Dr. and Mrs. DuBose have eight grandchildren and three step-grandchildren: Hugh H. DuBose, III (Erin) of Chicago, IL, Bratton W. DuBose of Houston, TX, Beverly D. Bowers (William) of Columbia, SC, Sallie W. DuBose of Raleigh, NC. Anne L. Duvall of Mt Pleasant, SC., Theodore B. DuBose, Jr. of Washington, DC., Katherine K. DuBose of Palo Alto, CA, Clarke W. DuBose, Jr. of Columbia, SC, Samuel A. Saunders, Raleigh, NC, Charlotte S. Post of Wilmington, NC and Stephen H. Saunders of Raleigh, NC.
Dr. DuBose was predeceased by his two sisters, Blanche D. Willard and Harriet K. Gray, and his brother Theodore M. DuBose, III.
Dr. DuBose was a life-long communicant of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. There he served on the Vestry and as Junior and Senior Warden. Dr. DuBose was a member of the South Carolina Huguenot Society, South Carolina Historical Society, Forest Lake Club, Pine Tree Hunt Club, and the Columbia Cotillion Club, where he served as President. Over his lifetime, Dr. DuBose enjoyed golf, tennis sailing, dove hunting and other outdoor activities. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his home on Lake Murray.
Services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Inurnment will be private. The family will receive friends following the service in Satterlee Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the South Carolina Huguenot Society, Trinity Foundation, Epworth Children’s Home, or a charity of one’s choice.
The family is very appreciative of the staffs of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, Still Hopes Solutions for Living, and Palmetto Health HomeCare and Hospice Services.
