Jack Otho Wingate, 88, of Columbia, South Carolina, died on Friday, September 17, 2021. A worship service will be held Monday, September 20, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, with Reverends Bryan Bult and Craig Wilkes officiating. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Sunday, September 19, at the home of Ken and Cathy Wingate.
Jack was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on June 6, 1933, the second child of his late parents, Robert Nimrod Wingate and Eula Mae Harrison Wingate. He is survived by his children, Vicki Wingate Wilkes (Craig), of Columbia, Kenneth Bryan Wingate (Cathy), of Columbia, Jeffrey Keith Wingate (Jennifer), of Birmingham, Michigan, and Gregory Neil Wingate of Moncks Corner, in addition to nine grandchildren: Miriam W. Ashworth (David), K. Bryan Wingate, Jr. (Jeanette), Catharine W. Halkyard (Rick), Jeffrey Samuel Wingate, Ryan Thomas Wingate, George Craig Wilkes, Susannah Kate Wilkes, India Noelle Wingate, and Jack Daniel Wingate, and six great-grandchildren, as well as a sister, Joanne W. Todd (Harry) of Griffin, Georgia. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Robert Evans Wingate and Furman Delano Wingate, his wife, Martha Nell Bolen, and his daughter-in-law, Melissa Burton Wingate.
Jack was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and the ROTC at the University of South Carolina, while also working as a night clerk at the Wade Hampton Hotel to put himself through school. After graduating with an accounting degree in 1955, he served as an officer in the United States Navy.
Jack spent his professional career in Columbia as a Certified Public Accountant. He enjoyed volunteering as the official statistician for the University of South Carolina men’s basketball team during the tenure of Coach Frank McGuire. He was an avid golfer, and a longtime member of Forest Lake Country Club.
Despite declining health in recent years, Jack remained cheerful, outgoing, and winsome until the end. The family is grateful to the staff of Brookdale Senior Living on Springtree Road for their devoted and loving assistance to him.
