

COLUMBIA - Dr. James McKnight Timmons, 98, who resided at the Columbia Presbyterian Community died April 9, 2015. Born February 9, 1917, in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Dr. Henry Loyola Timmons and Louise McKnight Timmons. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and Duke University Medical School, his internship and residency in Otorhinolaryngology was at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He was in private practice of Otorhinolaryngology with the Columbia Ear, Nose and Throat group for 40 years. Dr. Timmons was a diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology, a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, a member of the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society, member of the AMA and SC Medical Society, member and past-president of the Columbia Medical Society and was on the Board of Directors of the Columbia Hearing and Speech Center. He was inducted into the St. Luke Society of Providence Hospital in 2004 in honor of his service to his patients, the hospital, and the community. Dr. Timmons was a charter member and ruling elder of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. He was active for many years in prison visitation and the Visitation Committee at Eastminster Presbyterian Church and served regularly at the Washington Street Soup Kitchen. In addition to his medical practice and church activities, Dr. Timmons (known by many as Daddy T) enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing tennis and golf. After his retirement he pursued his interest in woodworking and produced beautiful furniture treasured by his family. He was married to the former Mary Ellen Whetsell for 70 years and is survived by daughter, Sarah Timmons Gladden and her husband Ted; son, Dr. James McKnight Timmons, Jr. and his wife, Beverly; son, Clyde Whetsell Timmons and his wife, Carlin; and daughter, Helen Timmons Rose and her husband, Dick. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 20, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Community, 700 DaVega Dr., Lexington, SC. The family will receive friends at the Presbyterian Community following the service.
