John was predeceased by his parents, Alvin E. and Louise Mestyan Boie. He and his brother, Charles A. Boie, died on the same day from complications of Parkinson's disease.
John was retired from the SC Employment Security Commission as a Systems Programmer Analyst.
He enjoyed biking, hiking, reading religious books, and volunteering. John especially enjoyed traveling to the southwest and visiting national parks; Zion NP was his favorite and the parks around Moab, Utah. He was proud of the fact that he climbed Angel's Landing in Zion NP seven times in his late '60s and '70s.
John was a faithful member of his church. For many years, he enjoyed singing with the choir.
He was recognized for many years volunteering for the Richland County Public Library and for volunteering in the Providence Hospital ER. He especially enjoyed volunteering on the Life Reach helicopter at Providence Hospital.
The family would like to thank caregivers Toni and Ryan for their tender care of John over the last two years.
While flowers are appreciated, donations for Parkinson's research would be appropriate since both John and his brother Chuck were diagnosed with the condition. To donate go to
