John Howard Popovich was the son of Steve Popovich and Mary Melinda Carpenter of Webster County in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia, where he spent his youth exploring the woods, and fishing in the Elk River.
A graduate of Salem College with a degree in business, John served in the United States Marine Corps Second Division, and was deployed to the Mediterranean during the tense time of the nationalization of the Suez Canal. For thirty years he was employed as an executive with the Kresge Corporation, first traveling across the country opening new K-Mart stores, and later serving in management at the Dutch Square and Two Notch Road locations.
Generous, witty, and kind, John was an avid reader. He was never happier than when he could be of help or service to someone.
John is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Patricia Anders Popovich; a daughter, Lara Elizabeth Popovich of Columbia; a brother, James Nelson Popovich of Pomona, California; and a brother- in- law, Ronald Berna Anders of Raleigh, North Carolina.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Food Pantry at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church, 1500 Broad River Rd. Columbia, SC, 29210.
