

Joseph “Joe” Aaron Plyler IV, 61, died January 11, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family. Son of the late Dr. Joseph Aaron Plyler III and Margaret Baradat Plyler, he was born April 29, 1960 in Columbia, SC. Joe attended AC Flora High School, where he met the love of his life, Jolene “Jody” Cobb Plyler, his wife of 44 years.
He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1983 with a Bachelor in Science. While earning his degree, Joe worked as a State House page for Jean Toal for one session and then started his 12 year career at Budweiser of Columbia. In 1990 he transitioned to the Credit Union industry where he spent 25 years, making many life-long friends along the way. He retired from SC Members First Federal Credit Union in 2014. Joe was a Son of the American Legion. His favorite yearly events were the annual fishing trip and Christmas party for the children at Epworth Children’s Home.
Since his childhood, Joe loved traveling to the beach with his family and friends, especially the Garden City and Surfside Beach area, where he could be found enjoying the sand and sun, listening to music, eating boiled peanuts and drinking a cold beer. An avid sports fan, he loved Gamecock Athletics, including several years as a football season ticket holder and cheering on the Lady Gamecocks basketball team. His favorite sport to watch was golf, he followed the PGA Tour weekly. Other hobbies include playing bridge, reading, and grilling. Joe never met a stranger and cherished time spent with friends hanging out at The American Legion and The Mousetrap. He will be remembered as a loving Husband, Father and best friend to many.
Surviving are his wife, Jolene Cobb Plyler, daughters Melissa Elizabeth Plyler and Whitney Jacqueline Plyler. Nephew, Joseph Troy McCabe of Greenville, SC. Aunt, Jean Plyler Ingram; sister-in-law, Kathryn Turine Cobb; brother-in-law, Owens Taylor Cobb III and niece-in-law Leah Kathryn Cobb, all of Columbia, SC. Brother-in-law, Walker Ennis Cobb of Mount Pleasant, SC. He was predeceased by sisters, Susan E Plyler and Celeste Plyler Huber. Mother-in-law, Jaqueline Oswald Cobb; father-in-law, Judge Owens Taylor Cobb, Jr and nephew-in-law, Charles Clinton Cobb.
Services will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine Street, followed by interment in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends one hour prior, beginning at 12 p.m. Joe requested that everyone come dressed casual, as you may remember him often wearing a tee shirt from his Tommy Bahama collection.
