
Josephine Wickliffe Hines passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Jo was born in Bowman, Georgia, to the late Joseph E. and Lucille Teasley Wickliffe, and grew up in Athens, Georgia. She graduated from Athens High School, received a BS in Physical Education and a Masters in Education from the University of Georgia. While at UGA, Jo was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She taught physical education at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina. While in Hartsville, she met and married Frank B. Hines, Jr., a marriage of 65 years.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her sisters, Alice W. St. John and Dr. Billie Wickliffe. She is survived by her children, Frank Hines, III (Sondra), Billie Hines Muthig (Paul), Dan Hines (Margaret), and Lee Hines Muthig; her grandchildren, Dawn Hines Helps (Dave), Robin Muthig, Jeff Muthig (Kathleen), Dan Hines, Jr. (Vicki), John Hines (Haley), Phillip Hines (Amy), Erin Muthig Bridges (Brandon), Chris Muthig (Anna), and Travis Muthig (Carrie); her great-grandchildren David (Maddie), Ethan, and Faith Helps; Jackson Bridges; Aubrianna and Taylor Hines; and Thomas Wickliffe (Wick) and Jeffrey Paul (JP) Muthig.
Jo enjoyed golf, gardening, and volunteer work. She dedicated much of her life to serving her community through Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Red Cross, and the Lilac Garden Club. Notably, she volunteered with Riverbanks Zoo & Garden from its opening in 1974 until her passing. She was a charter member of Kathwood Baptist Church where she served in many capacities over the years. Jo may be best remembered for her gift of hospitality with an always open door and a dinner table that never knew a stranger, hosting Thursday night dinners for forty years.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Kathwood Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Riverbanks Zoo & Garden or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
