COLUMBIA - Judy Gibson Smith passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 25, 2015, after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. Judy was born in Columbia, South Carolina on January 16, 1956. She was the daughter of Clarence Gibson and Nell Griffith Gibson, who predeceased her. Judy is survived by her husband, Reid Smith; daughter, Jessica Branon; son, Austin Reid Smith; sister, Annette Gibson Lesher and her husband, Lee Lesher; brother, Robert Gibson and his wife, Laurel Gibson; grandchildren, Nellie and Isaac; and an extended network of close friends and co-workers who provided support and comfort during her illness. She also is survived by numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. Judy was a loving mother who supported her children in all of their endeavors. She took Jessica to piano lessons, listening to hours of practice and attending her many recitals. She was the team mom for Austin’s baseball teams, bonding with the players and treating them as though they were her own children. Judy was a 28 year employee of the United States Bankruptcy Court, where she earned the respect of her co-workers and members of the bankruptcy bar. She worked previously in banking and insurance. Judy was an awesome woman and a dear friend to all. Her gentle spirit and quiet demeanor will be missed. Judy was a lover of animals and the family suggests memorials be made to Pawmetto Lifeline, 1275 Bower Parkway, Columbia, SC 29212. A funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dear Reid and family, I am so sorry to learn of Judy's passing. She was a dear lady and I very much enjoyed talking with her over the years when I worked for Geoff Levy and when Judy worked at the bankruptcy court. She was always so kind. We had a mutual love of animals and I enjoyed talking about our pets with her too. I am sure she is helping God and the Angels take care of all of the precious animals who have moved on to Heaven. I will miss you Judy.
My condolences to your dear family.

Reid,Jessica and Austin, I was sad to learn that you lost your wife and mother. While I didn't know Judy well, I have fond memories of our shared time in scouts and baseball when our boys were much younger. Will and I both send our heartfelt sympathies to you all during this difficult time.

Judy and I went to high school (Spring Valley) together. Even then she was a poised and graceful girl and I always enjoyed being around her. I'm so sorry to hear of her death. I have no doubts that she will be greatly missed by any and all who knew her. She made a difference in my life.
