COLUMBIA, SC — Julie Nettles Beitz, widow of James Beitz, passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at the age of 74, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, following a final, intense struggle against a years-long accumulation of health problems.
Born on March 8, 1947 in Columbia to the late Clyde James Nettles and Julia Ulmer Nettles, Julie was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, where she was a beloved volunteer at Eastminster’s drop-in nursery. Because of her love for and enjoyment of little children, along with her infectious enthusiasm, her days as a volunteer at the nursery were among the happiest of her life. She also treasured gatherings with her groups of “girlfriends,” playing cards, travelling and, most of all, laughing. She delighted in hosting her children, grandchildren and friends at her mountain home in Connestee Falls, NC.
Julie graduated from A.C. Flora High School and attended Montreat-Anderson College, now known as Montreat College. Following her first marriage to Charles G. Rowland, she met her beloved James “Jim” Beitz, whom she married in May, 1998. Together they shared a zest for life with their respective children from previous marriages until Jim’s death in 2002.
In addition to her husband and parents, Julie was predeceased by her brother, Clyde James “Jamie” Nettles.
She is survived by her daughter, Julia Rowland Johnson (Edward) of Daniel Island, her son, Charles G. Rowland IV (Nell) of Wolcott, VT, and her son, David Z. Beitz (Tiffany) of Columbia; grandchildren, Julian Troxel and Caroline Johnson of Daniel Island, Sage Rowland and Alaedra Rowland of Wolcott, VT, Candra Bojalian (Peter) of Wilton, CT, Zachary Beitz and Nicholas Beitz of Columbia; great-granddaughter, Keegan Bojalian of of Wilton, CT; niece, Rebecca Nettles Tipton, and nephew, Brian Nettles.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 4, at Dunbar Funeral Home’s Devine Street Chapel. The funeral service will be held at Eastminster Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 5. A burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
Dunbar Funeral Home (Devine St.) is in charge of arrangements.
