

HORRELL HILL Katie Yarborough Coleman of Horrell Hill passed from this life on May 31, 2015, at Still Hopes Retirement Home. The sixth child of Joel Foster Yarborough and Louise Swygert Yarborough, Katie was born on May 2, 1922, in Jenkinsville, S.C. She was married to William DesPortes Coleman, Jr. Katie graduated from the Jenkinsville School and from Winthrop College, the Class of 1942. She taught school for 25 years, spending most of the years teaching fourth grade at Horrell Hill and Mill Creek Elementary. Upon retirement, she returned to help her brother, Henry, operate the Yarborough’s General Mercantile Store in Jenkinsville. Katie loved her Lord and she enjoyed life. She was a devoted member of Lebanon United Methodist Church for 59 years where she taught kindergarten Sunday School for 25 years, served on the Administrative Board on many committees and was an active member of the Women of the Church, serving in many roles and in the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a member and past president of the Lebanon Prime Timers and a member of the Lykesland Book Club and Alpha Delta Kappa (teachers’ sorority), Fidelis chapter. Most of Katie’s life was defined by her family who could always put a smile on her face. She hosted the holiday gatherings of her siblings, children, nieces and nephews and more recently her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was appreciated for her wonderful cooking and the Sunday feasts that were weekly events for many years. Katie is survived by her children, Foster D. (June Byars) Coleman of Hopkins and Lexington, Kay C. (Gary) Thompson of Tampa, Fla., Nealie C. (Rick) Werts of Columbia; grandchildren: Jill C. (Bobby) Kunkle, Chad (Katie) Coleman, and Beth W. (Mike) Hawkins of Lexington, Tracy T. (Brian) Leapard of Sumter, Mandy T. ( Max) Glynn of Hampstead, N.C. and Brant (Kelly) Werts of Charlotte, N.C. and her great-grandchildren, Britton and Coleman Leapard, Logan and Mason Glynn, Ainsley and Abby Kunkle, Elsy Coleman and Wilson and Lillie Hawkins; sisters-in-law, Bonnelle G. Yarborough of Pomaria and Betty C. Coleman of Columbia; and 19 beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by DesPortes in 1981; her parents; and her siblings, Howard S. (Janie McKinnon) Yarborough, Mary Louise Yarborough, Lottie Y.(Bernard P. ) Plowman, James Henry (Truett Goldsmith) Yarborough, Bessie Y. (George O.) Wood and Joel Foster “J. F.” Yarborough, Jr.; a nephew, George Henry Wood; and DesPortes’ siblings, whom she loved as her own, Emma C. (George D.) Long, Curtis E. (Mamie F.) Coleman and Jerol K. Coleman. The family is grateful for the wonderful, Christian service of Mrs. Sarah Jackson, who assisted Katie over the last few months. The staff at Still Hopes also provided dedicated and compassionate care. Visitation will be at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine Street on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 from 5 to 7 p.m. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Lebanon United Methodist Church, 10220 Garners Ferry Road, Eastover, SC 29044, conducted by The Reverend Drew Martin. Private graveside services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park preceding the Memorial Worship Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lebanon United Methodist Church Building Fund.
