Laurens Ryan Andrews Jr.

COLUMBIA – Laurens R. Andrews, Jr., 89, of Columbia, peacefully passed away on June 11, 2018. Born on May 24, 1929, in Elliott, he was the son of Laurens Ryan Andrews, Sr. and Mattie Carter Andrews. He graduated from Bishopville High School in 1946 and Clemson A. & M. in 1950, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. He served a distinguished combat tour in Korea from December 1951 to December 1952, earning the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal for Korea before being Honorably Discharged. He was employed as the Safety and Loss Control Manager at the Randolph Hope Company from 1966 until his retirement in 1994.

Laurens was married for 65 years to the love of his life, Sara Cook Andrews of Kershaw. He was a lifelong Clemson Tiger fan and an IPTAY member. He was a dedicated member of Greenlawn Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School for over forty years. He was a proud veteran who was active in the American Legion Post 6 in Columbia. He personified the love of God and country.

A husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he will be missed by those he loved and those that loved him. Laurens is survived by his wife, Sara Cook Andrews; his sister, Patricia Andrews Welsh (Josey) of North Augusta, SC; his children, L. Ryan Andrews, III, Colonel, USAF-Retired (Linda) of Athens, GA, Dr. Christopher L. Andrews (Sheryl) of Columbia, and Jill Andrews Kuppens (John) of Columbia; his grandchildren, SMSgt Ryan L. Andrews of Dayton, OH, Kelly Andrews Jones (Rodney) of San Angelo, TX, Emily Andrews McMaster (William) of Nashville, TN, and Dr. Matthew L. Andrews (Carter) of Richmond Hill, GA; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Greenlawn Baptist Church, 6612 Garners Ferry Rd, Columbia, SC 29209. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Burial will be private in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenlawn Baptist Church.
