Mack was born in Cheraw, S.C. on November 6, 1937 to Randolph Irvin Quick and Lillie Mae Johnson Quick. He spent an adventurous boyhood in Cheraw, S.C. and held a deep and life-long affection for his hometown and the memories made there.
In 1955, at age 18, Mack enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his 26 years of service, he was stationed in Alabama, Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Okinawa, and Turkey. After retiring from the USAF in 1981 with the rank of Master Sergeant, Mack worked as a state employee for a short time before becoming a small business owner in Sumter, S.C. Mack enjoyed many years as the proprietor of the Quick Stop (a small convenience store), Todd’s Steak House, and Tracie’s Sub Shop before his final retirement in 1996.
Mack married Barbara Catherine Turner in 1955 and they had three children together, Annette Belinda Quick Davis, Edward Randolph Quick, and Richard Alan Quick. Mack married Nancy Irene Hohenberger in 1971 and they had two children together, Tracie Christina Quick and Todd Nicholas Quick. Mack also embraced his sister-in-law, Sandra Darlene Duncan, as his own.
Mack was preceded in death by his parents, Randolph Irvin and Lillie Mae; his siblings, Charles Harrison and Joann; and his sons, Todd and Richard. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his daughters Annette and Tracie, his son Edward, his sister-in-law Sandra, twelve grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mack was known for his shenanigans, pranks, and many tall tales. He was a gifted story teller and his family knew to watch for the sly twinkle in his eye because not all his stories were based in fact. He had a knack for the inappropriate and relished a really good dirty joke. He was sneaky and could not be entirely trusted with a deck of cards. He liked to break into his presents before Christmas, rewrap them to avoid detection, then frustrate his family with his impossibly correct guesses.
Some of his favorite things were a hot craps table or poker hand. He had a standing $100 prize to any of his children or grandchildren who could beat him at checkers, but none of them ever did. He was wildly superstitious, especially about black cats and the number 13, until one crazy day in 2018 when he won a sports car on Friday the 13th.
Mack had a huge sweet tooth and loved pineapple upside down cake, banana pudding, german chocolate cake, and Mounds bars. He was a life-long night owl and was always up for a 2am breakfast. He enjoyed his food, especially seafood and steak, and he rarely declined to share a good meal. He somehow managed to steal the heart from every cut watermelon.
Mack had a deep love of animals, especially dogs, and was blessed with many beloved pets throughout his life. He loved fishing and boating, and for much of his life also enjoyed hunting. From his trusty recliner he would watch ‘the news’ and 60 Minutes, boxing, MMA, and Judge Judy. He enjoyed music and had a big mushy soft spot for babies.
While not a man who often expressed his softer feelings, Mack was always dedicated in his love for Nancy and considered her the biggest blessing of his life. He was a loving father and fretted for his children, yearning for their health and happiness. He was a generous friend and could be counted on to show up when called. He lived the life he wanted and allowed others to do the same. “One of a Kind” and “Quite a Character” were phrases often used to describe him.
The family is deeply grateful to all those who contributed to Mack’s care and comfort in the last years of his life, including the Dorn VA CLC and Dialysis Unit, and MedShore ambulance service.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association. In lieu of donation, Mack would be 100% on board if you made a hot bet in his memory, then shot your best shot. Win or lose, Mack always loved a good game.
