Maj. Chaplain John Randolph Houser

COLUMBIA - A graveside service with full military honors for Maj. Chaplain John Randolph Houser (U.S. Army, Ret.), 72, will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2021 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Masks will be required for those in attendance. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Chaplain John Houser died Friday, August 27, 2021. Born in Boone, N.C., he was the son of the late J.C. and Sally Hodges Houser. He earned a Bachelor of Music through Indiana University. He earned a Master of Divinity and Master of Bible Languages with the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary. He also earned a Doctor of Ministry through Luther Rice Seminary.

He retired from the U.S. Army as a Chaplain and worked in the same capacity with the S.C. Department of Corrections at Kirkland Correctional Institution. He was an Adjunct Professor of Religion with Midlands Technical College. He also enjoyed attending and participating in services at Fort Jackson Main Post Chapel.

He was a member extraordinaire of the Columbia Running Club and completed marathons and races regularly. He was a member and Athletic Chaplain with the Jewish Community Center where he regularly completed Peloton rides and Zumba classes. He logged over 1,000 miles of running this year, a huge milestone.

He never went anywhere without seeing or making a friend with his warm smile, friendly disposition, and encouraging nature. He was a loving spouse, incredible father, amazing grandfather, caring friend, and dedicated athlete. He will be terribly missed by those he loved and who loved him.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Houser; daughter, Elizabeth Houser Broome; son, John Houser Jr.; son-in-law, Joshua Dylan Broome; granddaughter, Vera Broome; and grandson, Warren Broome.

He was predeceased by his sister, JoAnne Ledbetter Chadwick.
