

A Mass for Christian Burial will be celebrated for the repose of the soul of Marcine Muri Lyon Thompson on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 3600 Devine Street, Columbia. Burial will follow at Melrose Cemetery in Abbeville.
After the Mass, family and friends will gather on the front lawn of the parish to visit before the family departs for the burial.
Mrs. Thompson was the widow of both James Fraser Lyon III and Lt. Col. John Wendell Thompson. Mr. Lyon was the father of her two sons, John Marcus Lyon and James Lyon. Born in Buena Vista, Virginia to the late Marcus Joseph Muri and the late Clara Mae Shafer Muri, she graduated from Cheraw High School and later attended nursing school at Greenville (SC) General Hospital. After her marriage to Mr. Lyon, she was employed in a number of administrative positions which included work for Holland Oil Company, the South Carolina Tax Commission, the law firm of Bradley, Gebharbt, DeLaney and Millett, the law firm of Herbert, James and Williams, Chambers, Inc., Food Brokers, Inc., and Sterling Services, Inc.
While a resident at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, she very much enjoyed being able to engage in the social and religious life of the community. She also felt blessed to have the resources and opportunities to make meaningful contributions to charitable endeavors in the greater Columbia area. For many years she greatly enjoyed travel overseas and throughout the United States and Canada.
A great source of pride and joy for her were her two sons, John Marcus Lyon, who is an investment banker and Father James Lyon, who is a parish priest.
Survivors include her sons, John Marcus Lyon (Celeste) of Lexington and James Lyon (Sallie) of Columbia; grandchildren, Lindsay Demastes (Andrew), Andrew Lyon, James Lyon (Kristine) and Leslie Clare Lyon Hennessy (Colin); great- grandchildren, Olivia, Evelyn, Aubrey, Nora and Zoe; siblings, Alan Timothy Muri (Betty) of Charlottesville VA, Linda Muri McQuaige Dellinger (John) of Cherryville, NC and Marc Joseph Muri (Kay) of Blythewood.
The family wishes to express appreciation for the staff serving in the skilled care wing at Still Hopes and the Prisma Hospice staff for their kind and gentle care of Marcine. Special thanks are also given to the Eucharistic Ministers from Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Bob Nerbun and Robert Henry, for their faithfulness over the past three years in providing Marcine with weekly pastoral and sacramental visits. Their visits made a meaningful difference in her quality of life.
