Margaret was born April 13, 1925 in Harringworth, Northamptonshire, England and was known to her English family as “Betty”. The family later moved to Kettering in Northamptonshire, where as a teenager she met her husband USAF Sergeant Carroll Marshall during World War II. A war- time romance resulted in their post-war marriage in New York City.
Her life with the Air Force led her family from New York to Georgia to Texas to Japan to England and eventually to South Carolina. Her interesting and amusing anecdotes about her life will be part of our many loving and happy memories, as will be her quick wit, intelligence and infectious smile.
An accomplished pianist, she was also known for her expert sewing and handcraft skills. She was an avid reader and worked crossword puzzles in ink. She was a Department Head at JB White, and subsequently owned and operated her own handcraft store for many years.
Margaret was an avid, rabid Atlanta Braves’ fan and rarely missed watching their games. She was a walking encyclopedia of statistics and personal trivia on the current players.
She and Carroll square danced with The Columbia Twirlers for decades and were dedicated members and officers of the club. They were both always attired in full-fledged, beautiful square-dancing outfits, many of them sewn by Margaret.
Margaret had a loving volunteer heart. She and Carroll delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, and she continued delivering after Carroll died. She made her last delivery the Monday before she passed, ending an over 40-year history of delivery.
A strong Christian, she was active at Bethel United Methodist Church, as Sunday School class president and teacher, and choir and bell choir member.
She is survived by daughters Karen Stewart (Columbia SC), Mary Beth Davis (Chamblee GA) son Douglas Marshall (Columbia SC), and grandsons Mark Stewart (Columbia SC) and Cason Marshall (Grovetown GA). In England, she is survived by nephew John Elliott and niece Sandra Melhuish. In Texas, she is survived by nieces Sandra Burnham, Judy Coffee and Debra Gallant. She is also survived by great nephews and nieces in England and Texas.
She is predeceased by her husband, her parents Arthur and Alice Charity, brother Victor Charity and sister Mary Ethel Elliott.
The family wishes to profusely thank Margaret’s caregivers, Robin Sims and Barbara Hysten, for taking such professional, kind and loving care of her for over a year. Margaret loved both ladies.
Cremation was conducted at Dunbar Funeral Home, and a memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Friday, July 12, 2024 at Bethel United Methodist Church. An interment ceremony in the Memorial Garden will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Senior Resources Meals on Wheels, 2817 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205 or to Bethel United Methodist Church, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia, SC 29206.
