Margaret Powell-Holton passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024 peacefully at 97. Margaret was admired for her zest for life and for never stepping out of the door without applying her lipstick. She was a superb conversationalist and generally just a joy to be around.
Margaret was born to Fred and Catherine McDonald in Mobile, Alabama. She was a graduate of Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama. After living in various states and countries as an Army wife, Margaret settled in Columbia and became employed as a judicial officer in the Federal Court system.
Margaret loved the outdoors where she played golf, travelled and gardened extensively. She also made time for dancing about which she was passionate. In later years she would sit in her garden to commune with nature and read. She had a glorious life and thanked God for every new day he gave her.
Margaret was a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church and the Gold Star Wives.
She is survived by her son John D. Powell Ill (Beverly), her daughter-in-law, Novelene Powell, and her grandchildren, Ashley Copeland (Jim), Leigh Anne Gaffney (Adam), Michael Powell and Michael Ellinger as well as five great grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her son Geary Lee Powell and his daughter Amy, and by her husbands John D. Powell, Jr. and Charles D. Holton and partner F. Lynn Tate.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
