COLUMBIA - Margaret Sylvia White, 94, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2025. Born in the cool autumn of 1930, her childhood was spent amongst the sunswept mountains of Abtenau, Austria, where she lived with her parents and three siblings. While WWII brought much hardship—to her family and Austria both—Margaret always found strength in her faith. That strength would support her as she sought to build a new life in America with her husband, a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army.
America brought many new challenges and things to learn. Not only did she become a US citizen (passing the test with flying colors), she embarked on perhaps the greatest challenge yet - motherhood. She raised three wonderful children, of whom she was immensely proud. When not making Schnitzel, Linzertorte, and the world’s most delicious chocolate cake, Margaret excelled at many hobbies. She was an avid gardener, a master bridge player, president of the Wednesday club, and the first woman to serve on the Parish Council of her church in Danville, VA, where she lived for forty-four years. She was also a voracious reader and delighted in sewing clothes for children and Barbie dolls alike. Her gratitude and zeal for life always led her to plead with her family for ‘one more picture’ at any event, something they are infinitely grateful for now.
Margaret is survived by her three children, Sylvia, Karen, and Victor and their spouses, Nicholas and Renee. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jared, and Justin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Victor White, to whom she was married for fifty-three wonderful years. She was also preceded in death by her older siblings, Elizabeth and Wilfred; her younger brother, Eugene; and her son-in-law, Michael.
A memorial service for Margaret will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in the churchyard. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, which faithfully serves the poor and the sick. Her family would also encourage you to listen to her favorite song, ‘Ave Maria,’ and take a moment to enjoy the cardinals and their lovely tune.
