COLUMBIA - A private memorial service for Marion Murray Tompkins, 69, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Shandon Presbyterian Church. Please join us for a livestream of the service on Dunbar Funeral Home – Devine’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DunbarDevine

Ms. Tompkins died Wednesday, February 17, 2021. Born in Columbia, SC, she was one of four children to Marion Tompkins McArthur and the late Arthur Smyly Tompkins, III. A life-long resident of Columbia, Marion was a graduate of Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina. Through her lifetime, she taught art to elementary age students and she was an active member of Shandon Presbyterian Church, where she volunteered, served, and created prayer mats and blankets for the congregation.

Marion’s free and uninhibited spirit made an impression on those around her. She was the first person on the dance floor and could draw in a crowd quickly. She was a passionate and gifted artist and used her talents to spread joy across her community. She spent countless hours painting, drawing and knitting and then sharing her artwork to bring comfort to those near and dear. Her gentle soul and kind heart made her a friend to all. She had a quirky sense of humor and never met a person she did not like. She also had a lifetime love of animals, so much so that she was affectionately known as “Monkey” to her family and friends.

Surviving are her two daughters, Ann Buckner (James “Jeb” Emmett Jr.) and Murray Austin Young (Christopher Lane); grandsons, James Emmett Buckner III and Porter Tompkins Young; granddaughter, Austin Ann Young; mother, Marion Tompkins McArthur; brother, Arthur Smyly Tompkins IV; two sisters, Barrie Tompkins and Mary Lib Hampton; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Gwen Brown.

She was predeceased by her father, Arthur Smyly Tompkins, III, brother-in-law, John Drew Hampton, and stepfather, Palmer McArthur.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to NAMI, PO Box 49104, Baltimore, MD 21297 or Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street, Columbia, SC 29205. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Ms. Tompkins. I was a MedTech at Carolina Gardens when she first arrived there up until about 3 years ago. I would still go and visit her after I quit working there. Ms. Tompkins had the sweetest soul and was always so kind to me, I still have a painting she made for me of an Angel & a cross she knitted. She always gave the best advice & we stayed in touch on Facebook by commenting on each other’s pictures. She will be missed by so many. Praying for the family!

I worked with Marion at R.L.Bryan and enjoyed every minute of it. She was such a kind person! She dearly loved her daughters and family. I haven't talked to her in several years, but I thought of her often. It is strange that she was especially on my mind last week. I told myself that I needed to call her and try to meet for lunch. Rest in peace Marion! Prayers for the family!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Marion was so kind as to rent a room to me for two years when I was in law school. She made the best spaghetti and always listened to my stories, thoughts, and fears. She was the most encouraging, patient person. I will miss her dearly. May she Rest In Peace.

Marion was one of my best friends ever, especially during our younger years. So many cherished memories and fun times at her house, the beach, and mountains. From kissing beatle cards to horrified hairdos before dances, and many more. These memories continue to surface as I remember her and her family.
