Marion W. Trotti, a resident of King’s Bridge Retirement Community in Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on August 14, 2021. There will be a joint memorial service for Martha and Marion at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Columbia, South Carolina at 2PM on October 16, with a reception following. There will also be a private ceremony at King’s Bridge in Atlanta. Interment was alongside his wife Martha in Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the John M. Trotti Scholarship Fund at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia or to a charity of one’s choice.
Mr. Trotti was born in Columbia on April 19, 1921 and grew up in West Columbia. He was a son of the late Laurie S. and Rosabelle Wessinger Trotti of West Columbia.
In his youth Mr. Trotti was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
He was a graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School, the University of South Carolina, and the United States Military Academy at West Point.
A magna cum laude graduate of the University of South Carolina, he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Kappa Sigma while at the University.
Upon graduation from West Point, Mr. Trotti was commissioned in the Corp of Engineers, United States Army. Subsequently he graduated from the Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and then served as an Army officer in Korea, at Fort Jackson, S.C., Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Benning, Georgia.
He married Martha Frick of Columbia in 1945.
Mr. Trotti returned to civilian life as an employee of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company.
His career with Southern Bell included assignments in the Engineering, Traffic, Plant and Network Departments in Columbia, Charleston, and Florence, South Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia, as well as a tour with AT&T (headquarters of all the Bell systems at the time) in New York City. He retired from Southern Bell Headquarters in Atlanta in 1982. Martha and he then moved back to Columbia.
While working for Southern Bell, he also served in the South Carolina National Guard, retiring in 1967 as a Colonel.
Mr. Trotti served in many capacities in the Lutheran Church in the various places he lived during his life. He and Martha retained their membership at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Columbia when they moved to King’s Bridge in Atlanta to be near their sons and their families.
He was pre-deceased by his wife Martha Frick Trotti; son Rev. John Trotti; grandchildren Christopher Trotti (son of John) and Rachel Trotti (daughter of James); and brother Wyman Trotti Sr.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law Patti Trotti (widow of John) and grandchildren Elizabeth Trotti and John Trotti (Nathalie); son Col. Paul Trotti Sr. (Mary Jane) and grandchildren Paul Trotti Jr. (Lindsay), Jim Trotti, and Sarah Willis (Grant); and son James Trotti (Joy) and grandchild Rebekah Trotti. Survivors also include 6 great grandchildren.
