Martha Elizabeth Owen Derrick, affectionately known as “Marty,” passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and unwavering strength.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, on September 24, 1940, she was the cherished only child of the late Oliver Burton Owen and Sunie Katherine Summer Owen.
Martha grew up surrounded by family and friends in downtown Columbia, where she developed a lifelong appreciation for connection, community, and the simple joys of life. She devoted the majority of her life to her family, nurturing her two children, Scott and Wendy, with remarkable love and steadfast devotion. Her children and their families were the center of her heart.
She is survived by her son, Scott Derrick (Nicole), and their four children: Kaylene, Seth, Samuel, and Stone. She is also survived by her daughter, Wendy Davis (Darren), and their three children: Savannah, Jesse, and Luke Davis (Rhianna).
Martha’s granddaughter, Kaylene Medlin (Marcus), blessed her with three great-grandchildren: Emma, Aria, and Lily. Her granddaughter, Savannah Alban (Juan), blessed her with two additional great-grandchildren: Adelyn and Elliot.
Martha’s creativity and dedication were evident in every aspect of her life, from crafting artisan jewelry and crocheted treasures to cultivating all things green and blooming. Her caring and nurturing nature brought beauty to all she touched. Her culinary talents delighted countless family gatherings with warm Southern meals shared around the table.
As a mature believer in Jesus Christ, she faced every challenge with steadfast determination and quiet strength that inspired everyone who knew her.
Martha retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections, earning multiple awards for her dedication and service. Her commitment, compassion, and integrity left an indelible mark on her colleagues and community.
Martha will be profoundly missed. Her family finds comfort in knowing that her love, guidance, and spirit live on through the generations she cherished. Though her absence leaves a deep void, the memories she created, the love she shared, and the beauty she nurtured will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
