Mary Catherine Gause

Cathy was born September 24, 1954, in Charleston, SC to the late Dr. William Edward Gause Jr. and Gertrude Jenkins Gause. She was a graduate of Hammond School and the University of South Carolina and a member of Chi Omega, the Eta Gamma Chapter.

Cathy was the epitome of a southern lady with her gentle nature and unwavering faith. She raised her two daughters, Catherine and Jenny, with unconditional love and devotion. Cathy made her home in Columbia, SC and later moved to Roanoke, Virginia where she lived until her passing.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Jeanne’s Elderly Care and Gentle Shepherd Hospice in Roanoke, VA for their exceptional care.

Cathy is survived by her devoted companion, Ralph K. Smith of Roanoke, VA; daughters, Catherine Coffer (Hunter) of Columbia, SC and Jenny Butler (Jim) of Richmond, VA; her grandchildren, Lauren Bray Ramsey, Mary Wells Ramsey, Allie Butler, Jack Butler, Addie Coffer and Barrett Coffer; her brother, Bill Gause of Columbia, SC, sister, Ann Culpepper (Wright) of St. Simons Island, GA and nephews, Wright Culpepper (Jenn), Bill Culpepper (Lindsey), Will Gause (Ashley); niece, Catherine Ann Culpepper; Aunt Emma McElveen Laffitte; and nine great-nieces and nephews.

The family will host a visitation on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 1:00 pm, officiated by Reverend Wright Culpepper at the funeral home, followed by a burial service in Elmwood Cemetery.
