Mary Hughes Shumpert

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 27, 2022 at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29201. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church, 1633 Waverly Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585. A Columbia native, Mrs. Shumpert was born October 19, 1914 to Joseph and Florence Hiller Hughes. She was a 1934 graduate of Columbia High School and attended the University of South Carolina. For 27 years, alongside her husband, Julius Cleveland Shumpert they owned and operated the Columbia Grill on Hampton Street. Mary was a talented baker and one of her greatest enjoyments in life was making cakes for family and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband she is predeceased by her siblings and sister-in-law, Francis Hughes (Hester), Charles Hughes (Kitty), Joseph Hughes, Jr., Paul Hughes (Flossie), Evelyn Gilbert, a niece, Claire Pilcher and her golden retriever, Pawley Girl.

Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Harris, a grandson, Scott Swygert (Kristin), great grandsons, Archer and Jackson Swygert and nieces, Mary Katherine Taber (Bill), Frances Hughes, Charlene Henry (Dale), Diana Tillery (Cameron).

Memorial contributions may be made to The Basilica of Saint Peter or to Shandon UMC Building Fund.
