Born in Beirut, Lebanon, to Mohammad and Najiah Abboushi, Mazen spent his early life in Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon. After graduating from Ramallah Friends School in 1957, he came to the United States, enrolling at the Univ. of South Carolina where he began his new and fulfilling life in Columbia. It was here that he met his wife to be, Trannie Cobb – and the rest is history. The family he created was his proudest achievement. He was known to brag about his sons, Tarek and Chris, on more than one occasion.
Mazen did not want a flowery obituary listing all the details and activities in his life. We do want to note that he had a long, successful career in the textile industry retiring as Vice President of industrial engineering from Fruit of the Loom’s corporate headquarters in Bowling Green, Kentucky. After retiring he sometimes joined his friend Al Rose as a consultant for the Rose Corporation, work he deeply enjoyed. He and Trannie were able to travel the world together, take pride in their sons’ achievements, relish time with wonderful granddaughters and enjoy lifelong friendships. His golf outings with the fellas at Wildewood and Woodcreek brought him much pleasure, as did watching Gamecock sports, especially the ladies basketball games.
Everyone admired Mazen. His gentle ways, distinctive soft voice, and quiet dignified manner were traits he maintained until the end of his life.
The family is deeply grateful for his long-term caregivers: Phyllis Brown and Lashondra Stevenson, without whom Mazen would not have thrived as long as he did. The support and love from our Redbay neighbors was amazing. We will never forget.
Survivors include his wife Trannie, son Tarek and his wife Kye of Alexandria, VA.; son Chris and wife Melissa of Raleigh, NC.; granddaughters Taylor, Meagan and Caroline, and a sister, May of Amman, Jordan.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, followed by a reception. Golf attire is appropriate and welcome.
