Mrs. Brown died peacefully at Wildewood Downs Long Term Care facility on August 16, 2022, surrounded by her devoted and loving family. She was born in Berkeley County and was the daughter of the late Hiram Eugene and Estee Hilton Rudd of Sandridge Community. She was the valedictorian of Cross High School and earned advanced degrees from North Greenville University, Charleston Southern University, and Winthrop University. She retired from the state of South Carolina with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Social Services. She was a pastor's wife for 31 years and served at Bowman Baptist, Walnut Grove Baptist, Sauldam Baptist, First Baptist Church of North, Salem Baptist, Good Hope Baptist and South Beltline Baptist churches. She served the church in every possible capacity, specifically doing the weekly bulletins, developing the nursery and youth departments, and teaching Sunday School. She has been a member of Shandon Baptist Church for over 40 years and has continued to serve the Lord through the working with the WMU, Counting Committee, and the Prayer Room. She also served on the Executive Board for the Woman's Missionary Union, the Richland County Foster Care Review Board, and as a court appointed guardian.
Mrs. Brown was described as the epitome of the "Proverbs 31" woman. She was a great example of how to walk with the Lord and live a mature Christian life. She held strong to her beliefs and persevered through many hardships. This only made her better and more determined. She always applied herself and worked hard for her family, church, and community. She mentored multiple young people, encouraging education, their relationship with the Lord, and helping others. She valued fairness and honesty. The big joke in our family was being her favorite, because we were all her favorites!
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin Arthur Brown of 56 years, her sisters, Dorothy Carter of Charleston, SC and Gertrude Veno of Holly Hill, SC. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Powell of Johnson City, TN, Joyce (Jack) Comfort of Foxborough, MA; two brothers, Joseph (Pat) Rudd of Holly Hill, SC, Lenwood (Teresa) Rudd of Paducah, Ky; And brothers-in-law, Carol (Barbara) Brown of Charleston, SC and Oscar Veno of Holly Hill, SC. She is also survived by three sons, Raymond Brown of Columbia, Dale (Barbara) Brown of Columbia, Richard (Kelli) of Cary, NC; two daughters, Phyllis (Scott) Peterson of Cleveland, TN and Anita (Bill) Reppert of Leesburg, VA; One semi-adoptee, Gloria Black of Conway, SC; Nine grandchildren, Jason (Jenny) Brown, Tamara (Dave) Bostick, Brandon Brown, Eric Peterson, Becki (Chris) Smith, Douglas Peterson, Emily (Chris) King, Rachael Reppert and Jack Reppert; And five great grandchildren, Anna Clair, Ellie, and Beau Brown and Alli and Tyler Bostick.
