COLUMBIA - Monte Andrew Lemmon, 72, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Lexington Medical Center.

Monte was a lifelong resident of Columbia, the youngest son of Joseph Ray Lemmon and Nadine Mims Lemmon.

He was a 1968 graduate of Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina. He was also a long-time member of Rosewood Baptist Church. Monte was a Past President of the Builders Industry Association, as well as for the Home Builders Association of SC. He was a founding member of the Remodelers Council and served as Chairman of the council as well and received the Gordon A. Harrison Award from the association in 1990. Monte also served on the South Carolina Residential Builders Commission with LLR.

Starting out in the remodeling business, he expanded into building homes as well as commercial work. He was instrumental during his presidency in 1989 in building the BIA office on Taylor Street. Monte was also very well-known for his disaster relief efforts. He formed teams to go assist victims of Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Katrina, as well as assisting with the charitable activities of The Caring House and other projects with the association and Remodelers Council.

Monte never met a stranger and never passed up the opportunity to help others in need. He was always the one to pay it forward or help out a stranger in need, a quality that he instilled in his two sons. His fierce loyalty and love for his family were always evident. He was a role model to all who loved him and to so many others whose lives he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Carolyn Kennedy and brother Ray Lemmon, Jr. He is survived by his wife Sara Munroe Lemmon, his son Joey Lemmon (Michelle) of Eastover, son Andrew Lemmon of Columbia, his four beloved grandchildren Katie, Bella, Gracelynn and Joseph, his former wife Susan McBride Lemmon and the McBride family of Greenville, SC. He was also a beloved uncle to Todd Kennedy of Lake City, SC, Beth Smoak (David) of Summerville, SC, Christie Lemmon of West Columbia, SC, and seven great-nieces and nephews. He was a devoted stepfather to Emily, Daniel, and Andrew Clark and deeply loved by the Munroe family. Monte will also be missed by his yellow lab, Bailey, his devoted companion for over ten years.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, September 12, 2021 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at

It is with a heavy heart that I send condolences to the Lemmon family. I worked for Monte back in the mid 80's when his office was located on Rosewood Dr. and when he opened his office and showroom on Garners Ferry Rd. Monte was a gentle and caring soul with a big and giving heart. He was such a wonderful man to work for. I met Monte through his father, who was also a kindred spirit, when he came in the law office where I use to work.. Like his father, other than his faith in God, Monte's family came first in all that he did. My prayers are with his family at this difficult time. I will continue to carry found memories of Monte.

Monte was an awesome guy. So many fun memories of working with him in the Home Builders Association. The first time I met him was when we were in Sumter to clean up the day after Hugo. I knew then he was a great guy and would always be a friend. RIP Monte. You were loved.

I cannot express how missed Monte will be. Our friendship goes so far back I don’t even know where to begin. We took our Scuba Test together, our contractors license together and even had an office together there on Rosewood. He was not only a friend but he was like a brother to me. My heart was broken by the news of him passing.
Monte We Love You and to all of the family we love you as well and will have you forever in our thoughts and prayers.
Love Calvin and Family

I have known Monte since seventh grade at Hand Jr. High. We were so close that he took me to his family owned restaurant, called Chuck Wagon and enjoyed a free meal together. He was a very likable person and will be missed. I will always remember his kind ways! Sara, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May God Bless you all during these times!

My latest memory was a breakfast Beth Williams and I shared with Monte and Sara. In fact, the grits were the best I had enjoyed in a long time. Monte was the consummate gentleman. I pray that all who loved him can find some peace - each in their own way. Sara, you are heavy on my heart. Take good care of you. God bless you all.
