Marion was a great talented leader with many friends and many accomplishments and it has been a privilege for Chris and I to have known both you and Marion.  We will miss him as we shared so many parallels in our lives.  As a pediatrician he contributed to health and development of many families besides his own; what an accomplishment!!

Mitzi and I were so shocked to hear the sudden loss of Marion.  In my capacity as Associate Dean for Basic Science, I worked with him closely at the USC School of Medicine from 2005-2011.  He was a very compassionate person, and always smiled even when tackling the most difficult issues that our School was facing.  He had so many accomplishments.  I remember the day when he was elected to be the President of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  It was a proud moment not only for Marion but also for the entire USC community.  We will certainly miss him!

Dr. Burton was an outstanding advocate for children and role model  to pediatricians and other healthcare providers. He was a man our state can be proud of and will be greatly missed.

He Cared about his family and he cared about the USCSOM and he cared about those of us who worked with him and appreciated everything anybody did for him.  I know that he will be greatly missed but all of the various organizations that he worked with, but nobody will miss him more than me.

I first met Dr. Burton when I landed in Columbia in 2007.  His support, guidance and friendship was significant. The state has lost a passionate leader for children's health but his legacy will forever be felt. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

There are fewer an fewer physicians called to the profession as a servant rather than the profession simply being a career.  Our state just lost one of the best actually called to serve God by caring for his fellow man; especially the children. It has been truly a blessing working with Dr. Burton at SCHA and at SCDHHS. Marion was a great role model in all he did in life and in his profession. His concern was always for the children and he never offered any excuses for what he said or did on their behalf. I admired his courage in that and will always keep that memory.
He was also a nice person and my heart goes out to Debbie and their family. His sudden passing is a great burden to bear and so I pray for him and for his family. He'll be missed by all.

Marion will always be remembered for his caring nature, compassion for others and dedication to the right endeavors. His contributions and passion to the medical field speak volumes. I shall miss him.

In 1985  Dr Burton helped me and a fellow pediatrician establish a practice in Anderson.  Being brand new medical school graduates , he mentored us and set us on a path to caring for children as he had always done . I send my sympathies and prayers to the Burton family. He is going to be truly missed.

I had the unique pleasure of working with Dr. Burton through SC DHEC.  He was a caring and compassionate physician with a special sense of humor. His love of children and his vision of the need for their health care helped to solidify my love of Public Health and its role in our state.  I will forever be grateful to him for helping me realize the role God had for me as a nurse and public health provider.  My thanks to his family for sharing him with us.  And my sympathy to both his family and the state of South Carolina.  We have lost a true crusader for children in this state.

I wish to offer our sympathy to the entire family.  Marion was a classmate of mine and my wife at Abbeville High School during the early 60's.  He was always known as being a very nice person.  He will be missed by many.

Marion was a true champion of human (and especially child) health.  He helped so many young professionals, me included.  He was my children's pediatrician in Anderson.  South Carolina was indeed fortunate to have such a caring, giving man. He blessed his family, his profession, his friends and his beloved state.  May he be remembered with fondness and thankfulness.  His was a life well lived!

I met Dr. Burton while working at SCDHHS.  He was a joy to be around!  He cared so deeply about the children of SC.  His knowledge and expertise were exceptional; but, my favorite aspects of his character were his kind spirit and his "big ole heart".  

Prayers of comfort to Debbie and the entire Burton family for your loss.  I too will miss Marion's earthly presence; but, I will think about him fondly each time I see a healthy child!

Marion and I met in the fall of 2007. We were on the opposite sides of the health care equation; Marion as Medicaid Medical Director with an academic position at USC and myself as a managed care medical director. To his credit as a physician, gentleman and leader;  he was able to work through complex matters and form alliances to best serve the Medicaid population and the doctors who provided their care. We became colleagues and friends. I'm deeply saddened by his loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Marion from the very start of my pediatric career. He was the senior resident on my very first night of pediatric call in March of 1973. His passion for primary care and pediatrics was the most positive influence on me as a pediatrician. He will be missed but his influence will carry on.

I know the School of Medicine will greatly miss him as much as I will! I am thankful for all of his service to the state of South Carolina and the children he served.
