COLUMBIA Dr. Paul Lorraine Guerry, III passed away peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at the Prisma Heart Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. He was born on February 20, 1958, in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Paul Lorraine Guerry, Jr., D.D.S, and is survived by his mother, Betty Richter Guerry, M.D.
Upon graduating high school and completing his undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, he went on to earn his Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He completed his residency in Clinical and Anatomical Pathology at the Medical University of South Carolina and a fellowship in Anatomic Pathology from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York. Dr. Guerry was a practicing board certified Pathologist in Columbia, South Carolina, with hospital affiliations at Palmetto Health Richland, Palmetto Health Baptist, Kershaw Health Medical Center, Hilton Head Hospital, Coastal Carolina Hospital, Fairfield Memorial Health, and Prisma Health through the time of his death.
In addition to his practice experience, Dr. Guerry previously served as the Professional Director for the Department of Pathology for Palmetto Health; held teaching appointments at the Medical University of South Carolina Pathology Department and the School of Medical Technology at Baptist Medical Center; was a published physician in The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology; and was a member of the College of American Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the South Carolina Medical Association, and the Columbia Medical Society.
Away from his occupation, Dr. Guerry enjoyed spending time on his hunting farm with family and friends; playing his guitar, banjo, and bass; and most especially, spending precious time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Dr. Guerry is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Patricia Horton Guerry; his mother, Betty Richter Guerry, M.D.; his sons, Paul Lorraine Guerry, IV and his fiancé, Jenna Lynn Caporossi of Charleston, S.C., John Horton Guerry and his wife, Maggie Theos Guerry of Charleston, S.C.; his grandchildren, William Capers Guerry and John West Guerry; his sisters, Sarah Guerry Williams, M.D. of Lexington, KY and Mary Louise Guerry Force, M.D. of Birmingham, AL; and many other loving relatives, friends, and family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church in St. Charles, S.C. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
