COLUMBIA Peggy Ann Cantrell Seigler, 83, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014, at home. Born in Chesnee, South Carolina on February 12, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Hazie Eben Cantrell and Fay Corne Cantrell. She graduated from Chesnee High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Furman University.
Upon graduation, she taught at Aiken High School, where she was the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach, leading them to numerous state championships. It was also in Aiken that she met the charming Gary Seigler – when he came to pick up Peggy’s housemate for a date! He was, as everyone who came to know her, immediately smitten – and won her hand after five years of ardent courtship. She became the bride of Mr. Andrew Gary Seigler on June 28, 1958, and they celebrated their Golden Anniversary before his death in 2009.
The couple moved to Charlotte, where they welcomed their daughter, Allison Kathleen, in 1964. They resided there until 1973, when they moved to the Heathwood neighborhood in Columbia. They became active members of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and Peggy joined the Dogwood Garden Club. Two of her passions were her gardening and decorating.
Always busy, Peggy decided to go back to work when her friends were slowing down and retiring. Columbians will remember the cute sprite from her 12 years at the Creative Kids Toy Shop in Five Points. With the arrival of her granddaughter, Katie in 2005, Peggy’s life shifted into top gear. The love that she and Gary had bestowed on Allison was increased tenfold. She accompanied Allison, her husband Louie Harrison, and Katie on trips to Italy and France as often as possible and could be found with Katie at every opportunity.
There are dozens of adjectives to describe this Southern lady, who gave of herself to everyone she encountered: cheerful, loving, darling, kind, generous, laughing, caring are only a few.
She is survived by her brother, Steven Wilbur Cantrell and his wife, Jo Ann Daniel, of Mooresville, S.C.; their children, Steven William Cantrell and Elizabeth Cantrell Hassard. Her daughter, Allison Seigler Harrison, and her husband, Louie Little Harrison, III and their daughter, Kathleen Grace Harrison, of Columbia, also survive her. Her sister, Kathleen Cantrell Steele of Columbia predeceased her in 2012.
The family expresses their gratitude to the lovely nurses at South Carolina Oncology Associates.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Thompson Hall, 3200 Trenholm Road. The family will receive friends afterwards in the parlor of the Christian Living Center. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden Fund, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia SC, 29204.
