Ronald was born August 8, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York to Irish immigrants, Henry and Rose Beattie. As a lifelong learner, Ronald began his educational journey at St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn. He continued on to earn an undergraduate degree in English at St. John’s University and fulfilled the lifelong goal to earn a Master’s Degree in Humanities at Hofstra University. He then went on to have a prolific teaching career at Hewlett School in East Islip, NY followed by 25 years teaching middle school English for the Half Hollow Hills school district in Long Island, NY.
Ronald served his country proudly for 8 years in the United States Air Force. While serving in Germany as a linguist, he met the love of his life, Ilse Patschke, and last October they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
A prolific poet and writer, he loved the State House museum, Riverbanks Zoo, playing golf at Fort Jackson and evening walks with his wife.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, Harry Gene Beattie and Joseph Beattie.
Survivors include his wife, Ilse Beattie; a son, Thomas Beattie and wife Pam of Narrows, VA; a daughter, Faith Angove of Fairfax, VA; two grandchildren, Alexandra Angove of New York City, NY, Emma Foudali and husband Simon of St. Petersburg, Fla; and one great-grandchild, Jibreel Foudali.
