Mrs. Ruth Carter Ellis

COLUMBIA A visitation for Ruth Carter Ellis, 91, will be held from 5:00–7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Greenwood, S.C. Ruth died Saturday, April 4, 2015. Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late George Eckford Carter and Mary Fulmer Carter. In addition to being a devoted wife and homemaker, she was a loving mother, and known as Nanny to her grand and great-grandchildren who she adored. All of their friends were always welcome and enjoyed being in Mrs. Ellis’ home. Surviving are her son, Carter Ellis (Barbara) of Columbia; daughter, Mary Lebby Cox (Mark) of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Kathy Ellis of Columbia; six grandchildren, Tommy Ellis (Sim), Carter Ellis Jr. (Crystal), Matt Ellis (Courtenay), Meg Ellis, Loran Britt (David), Taylor Cox (Julee); and fourteen great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband of 66 years, Thomas Baynard Ellis III, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas B. Ellis IV; sisters, Gladys Carter, Alice B. Laird, Reba Robertson; and a brother, Herman Carter. The family expresses sincere gratitude to Audrey Giles for the compassionate and loving care over the years along with the other Visiting Angels.
