A Mass of Christian burial for Santina Rose Howard, 94, will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2019 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2019, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Mrs. Howard, widow of Mr. William Michael “Bill” Howard, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Born in Visalia, California on February 27, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Alfred Sciacca and Annie Gianini Sciacca.
Rose worked for Tapps and Belks department stores for many years. She and her husband were founding members of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Rose was an active volunteer in the Ladies Auxiliary at Providence Hospital, where she was Volunteer of the Year, as well as the NCO Club at Fort Jackson, where she served as president for one year. As a military wife, Rose traveled with her family to Okinawa, Japan, San Francisco, Germany (where they were also stationed), Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. While in Italy, they saw Pope John Paul XXIII. Rose loved sewing, ceramics, gardening, and cooking for her family members and guests.
Surviving are her daughter, Marianne Howard of Fayetteville; brother, Sam Sciacca of Visalia, CA; numerous nephews; one great-niece; and numerous great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Louise Pettit.
