
COLUMBIA - Memorial service for Sara Agnes Preacher Barber, 93, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2014, at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, with burial in the churchyard. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family Mrs. Barber died Tuesday, August 5, 2014. Born in Allendale, she was the daughter of the late Walter Monroe Preacher and Lucy Googe Preacher. She was married for 76 years to Thomas Porter Barber Jr. Before moving to Columbia, Sara lived in Allendale where she was a member of Swallow Savannah United Methodist Church. There she served as a choir member, a Sunday School teacher and chairman of the altar committee. While living in Allendale, she was the owner of Barber Florist Shop. Sara attended the University of South Carolina, was a graduate of Harper School of Floral Design and graduated from Chrysler College of Automotive Accounting. She was a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church in Columbia and was a member of the Medlock-Friendship Sunday School class and Way to Faith Circle. Surviving are her husband, Thomas P. Barber Jr.; a son, Thomas Porter Barber III (Pamela) of Newberry; five daughters, Mrs. William Pherigo (Sandra) of Columbia, Mrs. John Boney (Sarah Anne) of Barnwell, Mrs. William Gunnells (Portia) of Columbia, Mrs. Larry Sorrell (Monnene) of Columbia, Mrs. George Estes (Beth) of Columbia; 13 grandchildren, Mr. William Pherigo (Suzanne) of Ft. Collins, Colo., Mr. Durham Boney (Sandi) of Columbia, Mr. Walter Boney (Amy) of Barnwell, Mrs. Jerre Threat (Tiffany) of Clinton, Mr. William Gunnells Jr. (Brittnee) of Greenville, Mrs. Heath Hatchell (Saralyn) of Alpharetta, Ga., Mr. Brian Sorrell (Lindsay) of Columbia, Mrs. Justin Mitchum (Portia) of Liberty, Mr. Thomas Barber IV of Pickens, Mrs. Ryan Doherty (Sandra) of Rock Hill, Mr. Merrick Estes (Jennifer) of Fort Mill, Mr. Thomas Estes (Nancy) of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Mrs. Jay Floyd (Carene) of Columbia; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her sister, Minnie Lee Preacher Carden, lives in Blackshear, Ga. Sara was predeceased by a sister, Helen Preacher Trotti and a granddaughter, Helen Louis Boney.
