PAWLEY’S ISLAND - Dr. Uriah "Hoyt" Bodie Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. He was the son of the late Uriah Hoyt Bodie Sr. and Inez Smith Bodie. Dr. Bodie was born March 11, 1927 in Batesburg, SC. His life was a life of service demonstrated through his dedication and devotion to God, his family and his patients. After a brief stint in the Navy, he attended the University of South Carolina and MUSC, beginning his general medical practice in Johnston, SC. While in Johnston, he met his future wife Dottie who was a school teacher there. He would often tell stories about his years in rural general practice, often delivering a baby in exchange for a bushel of peaches. Beginning in 1958, he served a residency in radiology and radiation oncology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. In 1962, he began his work in Radiology in Columbia and became a founding partner in Pitts Radiology. He later received board certification in nuclear medicine and was a founder of the first Hospice organization on Columbia. When not spending time with family and extended family, Hoyt could be found in the garden. God truly blessed Hoyt with two green thumbs; he was an avid rose grower and at one time had over 300 rose bushes under his care. He exhibited roses in many SC Rose Society shows often winning awards, but his real passion was simply giving them away. Throughout his adult life, he blessed many of his patients, family and even strangers with the gift of beautiful roses. Beyond his profession and hobbies, Hoyt served his church and family. Hoyt and Dottie were active members of Trenholm Road United Methodist church in Columbia and later at St. Paul's United Methodist in Litchfield. Hoyt was a man of few words and showed his love and care for others through his actions. His gentle loving care provided a wonderful example to his three sons, twelve grand children, three great grand children, patients and many others who crossed his path. His love, generosity and kindness have left a lasting legacy. He is survived by his wife Dottie of 63 years; sons, Barry H. Bodie MD (Laurie), Edward S. Bodie (Dixie) and Charles A. Bodie (Maria); grandchildren, David A. Bodie DMD (Natalie), Renee B. Goldfinch (Stephen), Philip Bodie (Leigh Ann), Leslie Bassett (Brad), Stephen Bodie, Dianna Bodie, Lana P. Bodie Duda, and Sutton A. Bodie; great grand children, Reese A. Bodie, Ryan C. Bodie and Hadlee E. Goldfinch; and step-grandchildren, Sarah Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Sam Johnson and Sally Rodriguez (Ben). Special appreciation is expressed to his very dedicated and loving caregivers, Janet Cook and Lori Hopkins and others with Firstlight HomeCare of the Grand Strand. Visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205 on Saturday May 28th from 2:00-4:00 in the afternoon. A private family funeral will follow at 5:00 p.m. at the graveside in Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice PO Box 7275, Columbia, SC 29202.
