

Born in Rugby, North Dakota, he was a son of the late Fabian and Lucille Burckhard.
Peter graduated from Bishop Ryan High School in 1965. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Minot State College in 1972.
His careers included being an English teacher, serving in the US Army as a Ranger during the Vietnam War in 1969, owning his own house painting business, and a medical clerk at the VA Hospital.
Peter received several medals during his time in service. Those include the Purple Heart, Army commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service medal. Badges he received were Expert badge and machine gun bar, Sharpshooter badge and Rifle bar as well as Parachutist badge.
Peter was a faithful Christian, a man of prayer, and he enjoyed listening to God’s word daily. He was a member of Shandon Baptist Church. He sang in the choir for several years and would participate in Bible studies. He loved to listen to Christian music including classical hymns. His favorite way to spend time was with his family, especially trips to the beach or mountains.
Peter was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Rebecca. He was a supportive father who was a strong role model for his children. Peter was very hard working, generous and dependable. He also had a fun sense of humor and enjoyed making people smile.
Surviving are his sons, John Burckhard, and Scott Burckhard; daughters, Sarah West, Julee Cox and Stephanie Rotchstein; brothers Terry Burckhard, Randy Burckhard and Kevin Burckhard; sister, Bonnie Smith; and his 13 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca Ann Burckhard.
The family wishes to thank Pastor David and Janie Knapp for providing homebound ministry to our Dad over the past few years. In addition, we also are very thankful to his caregivers Dee, Emily and Susan. Finally, we extend our deep appreciation to all of his family who have been loving and supportive of him.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Friday, November 7, 2025 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine street Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 5:30 pm following the service at the funeral home.
