

Born in Miami, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Julian Dowdy McDuffie and Edith Frink McDuffie. A beloved teacher, Virginia taught third and fourth grades at Pinecrest Elementary school in Miami and at Brennen Elementary in Columbia. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
After graduating from the University of South Carolina, Virginia joined Pan American Airways as a stewardess and traveled throughout Cuba, South America and Central America. She passed her love of travel to her children taking them on trips to exotic locales around the world.
Surviving are her children, Margaret Edith Ariail of Manhattan, NY, Robert Lee Ariail III (Fair) of Camden, SC and Julianne A. Meerscheidt (John) of Cincinnati, OH; and three grandchildren, Evan McDuffie Meerscheidt, Kathleen Ariail Meerscheidt and Virginia Elizabeth Ariail. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Julian Dowdy McDuffie, Jr.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Kearse and Christenberry and the nursing staff of Karesh Longterm Care in Camden.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Columbia.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
