Obituary of Virginia Price Bowers
COLUMBIA - Virginia Price Bowers passed away in the early morning of Aug. 8, 2022 at the age of 97 at the Summerville Presbyterian Home. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, August 12 at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. The service will be at 11 am followed by a short visitation in the church narthex and graveside service at 12:30 at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery. Virginia, “Ginny”, was born March 8, 1925 and married Richard Hal Bowers “Dick”, on June 16, 1956. Virginia told many times of their three week honeymoon across country she planned while also fulfilling one of her educational requirements to complete her teaching credentials. She was a master planner, organizer and map designer. Dick helped make her plans come to life. I’m sure the Lord has her at the top of some committee. James 2:26 “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” Virginia was devoted to her family Dick, Becky and Hal; Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Women of the Church, first woman Deacon, Church Choir, Forest Lake Elementary (3rd Grade), Girl Scouts (leader) Camping Club, Audubon Yard, Rose Society, State Museum (docent), Columbia Symphony Orchestra, and Music Club. Virginia was a great example and mentor to all her knew her. She lived life and all its opportunities and wonders, from the beauty of the Grand Canyon and Mr. Rushmore to the restful hammock of her hand carved camping spot at Waldemar on Lake Murray. Only complete with her family at her side as in her final months, especially her great grandchildren, were her best medicine. Surviving are her daughter, Rebecca Bowers Kirby and son, Richard Hal Bowers, Jr. (Gina); six grandchildren, Martin L. Kirby, Jr. (Emily), Richard S. Kirby (Sarah), Mary Elizabeth Martin (Thomas), Taylor Christian Waller, Wesley Reid Bowers, Gracie Elizabeth Bowers and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hal Bowers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 N Trenholm Rd, Columbia, SC 29206, or South Carolina State Museum, 301 Gervais St, Columbia, SC 29201.
