Walter "Bird" Duncan

Passed away on JULY 25, 2025
Obituary of Walter "Bird" Duncan
IN THE CARE OF

Dunbar Funeral Home (Devine)

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” - Matthew 11:28

Walter Duncan, known commonly by his longtime nickname of “Bird”, died on July 25, 2025 at the age of 77. He graduated from A.C. Flora High School in 1966. He attended Wofford College for 2 years and then transferred to the University of South Carolina where he graduated in 1971. The friendships and memories he made as part of Kappa Alpha Order remained forever special to him. He later became a chiropractor after graduating from Life University in Georgia. He was known for his caring nature and wanting to help anyone he could. No one was turned away in his office. His perseverance and unwavering faith, even when dealing with years of debilitating pain, were his strongest character traits. His answer to so many questions was simply to “pray”. His daughter, Rachel, was the light of his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alderman Duncan and Harriett S. Duncan, and his sister, Gelene D. Ellsworth. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Rachel. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws, Carl A. Ellsworth (Caroline) and John E. Cannon (Gloria); his niece, Ashleigh Ellsworth-Keller (David); and his nephew, Carl A. Ellsworth, Jr. (Kristen).

Elizabeth and Rachel would like to thank everyone who has supported them and prayed for them, including Elizabeth’s Bible study group and Sunday school class at Shandon Baptist Church. You are all appreciated beyond your understanding.

A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Pawmetto Lifeline, 1275 Bower Pkwy, Columbia SC 29212.
