
COLUMBIA A funeral service for Wendell Ray Wessinger, 98, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Mr. Wessinger died Monday, July 25, 2016. He was born on October 24, 1917 in Chapin, a son of the late Pearl Derrick and Arthur D. Wessinger. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the Bronze Star. He retired from Central Chevrolet following 37 years of service. A member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, he served as an usher and was on church council. Surviving are his wife of 78 years, Earline Shealy Wessinger; sons, Ray Wessinger Jr. (Jo Ann) of Lexington, James Ed Wessinger of Columbia, Larry Wessinger Sr. (Peggie) of Prosperity, Doug Wessinger of Columbia; grandchildren, Bill Wessinger (Lisa) of Lexington, Wendy Dorroh (Mike) of Lexington, Larry Wessinger Jr. (Christina) of Pontiac, Mary Mefford of Lexington; great-grandchildren, Will Dorroh, Ansley and Liam Wessinger, Brandon Mefford, Janie Wessinger; brother, Heyward Wessinger (Doris) of West Columbia; sisters, Dorothy Chapman of Cayce and Judy Swygert (John Carroll) of Chapin; and sisters-in-law, Rosemarie Wessinger and Betty Wessinger. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers and their spouses, Harold, Jennings, Carl (Annie Mae), Elmer (Edith) and Raymond (Callie) Wessinger; and a brother-in-law, Harold “Hack” Chapman.
