

Services for William "Billy" R. Crockett, age 95, will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, S.C. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park on Leesburg Road. Family and friends are invited to gather at 1:30 pm at the funeral home. Billy passed away on October 15, 2024. He was the son of the late David Millen and Willie Millen Crockett. He was born in Summerville on May 7, 1929 but moved to Orangeburg in 1938 and to Columbia in 1941. He graduated from Dreher High School in 1946 and was a 1951 Civil Engineering graduate of the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After serving two years in the U.S. Navy, Billy attended Yale University on an Automotive Safety Foundation fellowship and completed studies in highway traffic. His professional engineering experience was with Wilbur Smith and Associates, the Federal Highway Administration and the S.C. Department of Transportation, where he retired as Advance Planning Engineer in 1987.
Billy stayed busy during his retirement years, first as an investment advisor with WRC Capital Management and then as a lay preacher of over 10 years at Harmony Presbyterian located in Crockettville, S.C. He was active in all churches where he was a member. He taught Sunday School to different age groups and served as deacon and elder at Shandon Presbyterian, Ocean Drive Presbyterian and Summerville Presbyterian churches. Besides his church activities, he was an Eagle Scout, a middleweight amateur and Golden Gloves boxer, and a long time Gamecock sports fan. Billy was also an active jogger and participated in various running events.
Billy was single most of his life until age 65 when he married Ann Mood Miller. She was the love of his life. They lived in North Myrtle Beach for 7 years before moving to the Village at Summerville. Billy’s telephone message was the theme of his life – “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Ps. 118 vs. 24)
Billy was predeceased by his beloved Ann. He is survived by his stepchildren, Cynthia Antonelli (Jeff) of Galveston, Texas; Beth Quinn (John) of Cornelius, N.C.; and James Curtis Miller, Jr., (Colin) of Boston, MA; as well as six stepchildren and two step great grandchildren. On the Crockett side, Billy is survived by his nephew, David M. Crockett, III (Donna) and their three children, Catherine Gude (Adam) of Florence, SC and Elizabeth Myers (Patrick) of Summerville, SC, and Victoria Crockett of Florence, SC. He is also survived by a niece, Paula Crockett of Columbia. Billy was predeceased by a brother, David M. Crockett, Jr.
