COLUMBIA - Services for William O. Fair, 78, US Army (Ret.), will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Interment will be in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends 5 until 9:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Fair passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014. Born in Greenville, TN, he was the son of the late William and Verna Goodman Fair. He entered the US Army in 1956 and served until his retirement in 1976. He served three tours in Vietnam, three in Germany and one in Korea. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Good Conduct Medal and Driver Mechanic Badge. After his retirement from the military, he worked for Anchor Continental for 19 years. Mr. Fair was known as a kind, generous and selfless person, with an uncanny sense of humor. Seen as a father figure to all who knew him and a friend to anyone in need. He sponsored many immigrants and helped them achieve the same American freedom and opportunities that he has always cherished and protected. Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, My-Yen P. Fair; children, Doug B. Fair (Karen Literski) of Atlanta, GA, Angela L. Fair (Torsten Spitzka) of Arlington, VA and Danny W. Fair (Christina) of Columbia; grandchildren, Isabella, David, William, Emma and Sarah; brothers, Charles Fair of Evansville, IN, Carl Fair (Rose) of Mohawk, TN and David Fair (Diane) of Mosheim, TN; close in-laws, My Lee Phan, Khanh C. Phan (Tinh T. Vuong), Anthony L. Phan (Lan Nguyen), My Tuyet Phan (Len Tran), Anh Phan, and Quay Tran (Hra) from South Carolina. Close and special family friends include Darrel and Jackie McGovern, Betty Moreland, Pat Wirt (Lan), Sau Fitzpatrick, and Flipper Smith. He was preceded in death by a special aunt who raised him, Mae Pattison; mother-in-law, Ngoc Anh Thi Nguyen; three sisters, Gladys Carter, Mary McAmis and Larue Gosnell; and in-laws, David L. Phan, and Tinh Nguyen.
