Born in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Hampton Bland Hammond and Katrina Pardue Hammond. A graduate of Dreher High School, he attended Sewanee, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Master’s degree in Real Estate from the University of South Carolina. He worked in the family business, Hammond Company, as an Appraiser and Realtor alongside his father and brother.
At a younger age, Mike earned his Eagle Scout Award and enjoyed spending time sailing on Lake Murray. He was a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club in school. As an adult, Mike served his country in the Army National Guard. He was active in his church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, leading church retreats and studying the bible extensively. He was a member of the Lions Club, Cotillion Club, and the Tarantella Club. He loved traveling abroad with his wife and friends, tending to his yard and flower beds, cooking his family's favorite dishes, refinishing family antiques and spending time with his treasured grandchildren.
Mike was loved by all who met him. He was a kind southern gentleman with a clever sense of humor. Often, you could find him chuckling to himself or telling sarcastic jokes followed up with a wink and a smile.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Lott Hammond of Columbia, SC; two daughters, Elizabeth (Connie) LeConte Thackston (Stuart) of Eden, NC, and Katrina (Katie) Hammond Hanson (John) of Lexington, NC; son, John William Ripon Pope, III of Ninety Six, SC; beloved grandchildren Elizabeth Thackston, Emily Thackston, William Thackston, Mikell Hanson, William Pope, Colby Pope, Hampton Pope, and brother, Hampton Bland (Rusty) Hammond, Jr. (Plum), niece Carrie Hammond Waller and preceded in death by his nephew Richard Hammond.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Susan Black for her tremendous support over the past four years, the staff at The Palmettos and numerous caregivers who treated him with dignity and love.
In the spirit of Mike’s overwhelmingly generous donations of blood and platelets for children, memorials may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tennessee 38105.
